Question about gun crime in USA?

given that civilian ownership of handguns was withdrawn over a decade ago, crimes involving handguns have increases dramatically since then, which rather silences the promoters of the view when they were withdrawn, that it would zero crimes involving handgun's, when the changes in firearms legislation were implemented.
