What was the role of trade in the Middle Ages? What was the medieval attitude toward trade?

Well since the manor system during the middle ages was dominant and all manors were self-sufficient the other people who answered this question have no idea what they were talking about, especially the second guy who doesnt even realize that the middle ages ended in the year 1096 so for him to be referencing trading in the 1300s doesn't really make sense, as for the first person it was too long so i didn't want to read it but there was something about pepper which i thought was cool. anyway back to the question, manors were self sufficient so trade wasnt necessary, and nobody would venture outside of their peaceful manors to the chaos outside of their walls. this ended in 1096 when the head of the roman catholic church asked its people to go to war with the muslims who controlled the "Holy land", aka the crusades. Due to the crusades trade developed with the middle east through soldiers bringing home things from the lands they went to. When people saw these new goods they wanted them and thus trade increased, bringing europe out of the middle ages.
