Can Someone Help Me W/ MIDDLE EASTERN MUSIC?
Our music system is built upon half tones, like a piano goes up chromatically in half steps . Middle eastern music is in quarter tones both instrumentally and vocally. A quarter tone would be the note in between two adjacent keys on the piano. Their chromatic scale would have more steps to it. Their rhythms can also be different than western music. Listen to the Don Ellis Orchestra playing in quarter tones and using rhythms like 7/4 or 33/16. He studied Indian music and then applied it to a jazz orchestra. He also had Holton build him a special 1/4 tone trumpet. When you start to listen you think his solo is out of tune but then you realize that he's playing in quarter tones.
